Why Barbara Macleod is proud to call Oak Cliff home.
From “Oak Cliff… Ohhh” to “Oak Cliff… OH!”
Not long ago, saying you lived in Oak Cliff earned a hesitant “Ohhh…” from outsiders. Fast forward a decade or two—and now? It’s a proud, emphatic "OH!" Oak Cliff has blossomed into one of Dallas’s most vibrant, diverse, and culturally rich neighborhoods, known for its historic charm, artistic energy, and tight-knit community.
Where Is Oak Cliff?
No one quite agrees on the exact boundaries, but Barbara’s generous version goes like this:
North to I-30,
East to I-35—and yes, that includes Beckley Club Estates, famous for its free-roaming peacocks, and Cedar Crest, with its sweeping downtown views and the historic Cedar Crest Golf Course.
The southern edge stretches down to I-20,
and the western boundary follows Walton Walker, Loop 12, and even Spur 408.
That covers about 87 square miles, nearly a third of Dallas's total landmass—much bigger than most people realize!
Oak Cliff is many neighborhoods wrapped into one vibrant, diverse community. Here are a few highlights:
-
Bishop Arts
The most famous spot—bustling with shops, restaurants, bars, and a lively arts scene. Perfect for a night out or weekend stroll. -
Winnetka Heights
A historic gem full of charming bungalows and front porches where neighbors know each other. Holiday home tours and porch parties keep the community tight. -
Stevens Park
Elegant homes from the 1930s and 40s with nearby golf course and green trails. It’s peaceful but close to city energy. -
Elmwood
Quirky and creative, Elmwood offers coffee shops, festivals, a dog park, and an authentic neighborhood vibe that’s both laid-back and lively. -
Wynnewood North
Mid-century ranch homes on large lots, some bordering a hidden lake. Quiet streets with a suburban feel inside the city. -
Sister Neighborhoods: Kiestwood & Brettonwoods
Offer sprawling ranch homes on big lots, surrounded by trees and hills. A private, peaceful escape with classic mid-century charm.
Each neighborhood brings its own unique character to Oak Cliff. Whether you crave history, green space, or a vibrant community, Oak Cliff has a place for you!
Oak Cliff isn’t just about neighborhoods—it’s about the places that make this community feel like home. Here are a few of Barbara's personal favorites that capture the spirit of the area:
Eno’s Pizza
For fast, gourmet thin-crust pizza in Bishop Arts, Eno’s is her go-to. Their salads and cozy seating—both indoors and out—make it perfect for a casual meal with friends.
Tyler Station
A brilliant example of preservation and creativity. This former industrial site in Elmwood is now a lively “maker space” filled with an eclectic mix of shops and studios—breweries, bakeries, furniture workshops, and art co-ops. Keep an ear out for their “sip and stroll” events!
Cenzo’s Pizza
A true local gem on the edge of Winnetka Heights. They transformed an old lavanderia into a warm, inviting spot—winning a Preservation Dallas Award along the way. Plus, their pizzas are named after neighborhood streets, which makes every bite feel like a stroll through Oak Cliff.
Slow and Steady Coffee
A cozy spot on Edgefield in Elmwood, perfect for a chai or catching up with a client. Their vibe is relaxed but professional—a real neighborhood staple.
Kessler Theater
Barbara's favorite intimate concert venue. Small crowds, great bands, friendly staff, and a bar with cocktails made with care. Plus, it’s run by a fellow Richardson High grad, Jeffrey Lyles!
NOVA
A casual gastropub near the Kessler, serving elevated pub food and cocktails crafted with love. Don’t miss “Kerri Wednesday” for a special cocktail experience!
Nature lovers aren’t left out here. From Lake Cliff Park, home to the annual OC Earth Day Festival, to nearby Cedar Ridge Preserve, Cedar Hill State Park, and Dogwood Canyon Audubon, there are plenty of spaces to hike, relax, and reconnect with nature—without ever leaving the south side. Oak Cliff is a true oasis for nature lovers, families, and anyone looking to recharge outside—right in the middle of the city.
