National Autism Awareness Month
In honor of National Autism Awareness Month, we're highlighting the inspiring story of Heather. She is a proud mom of 3 daughters and one son. Her 7 year old son, Kylar, is a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Heather has a passion for helping others and making a difference. Her unique story and experiences have helped inspire her work, advocacy and dedication to helping families find the perfect home.
Heather spent 13 years as a medical transcriptionist. She spent 11 of those years at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center. New demands on Heather's life left her looking to start a new career. With her son, Kylar, on the autism spectrum, she knew she needed a career that allowed for flexibility while still supporting her family. Real Estate seemed like the perfect fit. Her lifelong passion for exploring homes and the need to find a career that would align with her family's needs led her to pursue this path.
A Unique Perspective in Real Estate
As someone who always loved looking at homes, Heather found that her perspective shifted once she became a mom to Kylar. When asked about this she said, "I can bring a different perspective to looking at homes, as I have to look at it through the eyes of my special needs child, so I am better equipped to help families with similar challenges!" Now, when she looks at a property, she doesn't just consider the aesthetics - she thinks about how the layout and spaces could be utilized. Heather is inspired to help other families find homes that cater to their specific needs.
Family is the cornerstone of Heather's life. She and her husband, Sam, have been together for nearly 27 years. They were high school sweethearts. Now, they have 3 daughters (Kayla, Faith, and Felicia), one son (Kylar), and seven grandkids. In 2011, they moved to Texas from Idaho to be closer to family. In addition to her work in real estate, Heather founded a nonprofit called Kylar's Journey, which provides support for children with ASD through social skills programs, animal therapies, and more affordable access to ASD service dogs. The nonprofit is deeply personal to her, as it's inspired by her own experience raising Kylar and seeing the benefits of these therapies firsthand.
Heather is excited about the growth in Sherman. Since she moved here in 2011, she has noticed all the changes. She is proud to call Sherman home and to be apart of the expansion.
